How much is a volunteer worth per hour?

Reminder: October is National Crime Prevention Month and National Cyber Security Month

In 1984, the National Crime Prevention Council designated October Crime Prevention Month. Every year since then, government agencies, civic groups, schools, businesses, and youth organizations have reached out to educate the public, showcase their accomplishments, and explore new partnerships during this special month. Crime Prevention Month recognizes and celebrates the practice of crime prevention, while promoting awareness of important issues such as victimization, volunteerism, and creating safer, more caring communities. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security's National Cyber Security Division is sponsoring the fifth annual National Cyber Security Awareness Month this October, designed to educate the public on the shared responsibility of protecting cyberspace. The department will recognize this important initiative through a series of events aimed at raising awareness of the ways in which citizens and businesses can better safeguard themselves in cyberspace.

Digital Transition: February 17, 2009

On February 17, 2009 all full-power broadcast television stations in the United States will stop broadcasting on analog airwaves and begin broadcasting only in digital. Millions of American residents depend on television as a reliable source of information, to include emergency alerts and warnings. Citizen Corps Councils are urged to inform members of your community -- especially older adults and homebound individuals -- of the digital transition to ensure they take any necessary action to receive and view over the air digital signals.

Disaster Relief

The National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (NVOAD) is a coalition of 49 nonprofit organizations that respond to disasters as part of their overall mission. Cash donations to support these organizations' efforts are appreciated in lieu of material donations, such as clothing, food, or supplies. Please click on the appropriate National VOAD member's website to learn how you can donate directly to the organization of your choice. Volunteers will be needed in the months ahead to support relief and recovery efforts.
