The Mercury Study Report to Congress – EPA prepared this report to fulfill requirements of the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990. Published in 1997, it is an eight volume assessment of the magnitude of U.S. mercury emissions by source; the health and environmental impacts of those emissions; and the availability and cost of control technologies.

Volume IV: An Assessment of Exposure to Mercury in the United States (PDF) (293 pp., 1MB, About PDF) - Volume IV is an exposure assessment component of the risk assessment for anthropogenic mercury emissions.

Volume V: Health Effects of Mercury and Mercury Compounds (PDF) (349 pp., 1MB, About PDF) - Volume V summarizes the available health effects along with the hazard identification and dose-response assessments for three forms of mercury: elemental mercury, inorganic mercury, and methylmercury (organic mercury).

Volume VII: Characterization of Human Health and Wildlife Risks from Mercury Exposure in the United States (PDF) (152 pp., 727K, About PDF) - Volume VII is an assessment of human health and ecological effects, identifies human subpopulations or wildlife species at elevated risk from mercury, assesses exposures from multiple environmental media, and describes the uncertainty and variability in these assessments.

Mercury and Fish Consumption Advisories - State and local governments issue fish consumption advisories when the fish are unsafe to eat. The advisories may suggest that people avoid eating certain kinds or certain amounts of fish. Some advisories apply to specific water types (like lakes). Visit this link to learn more about mercury in fish and fish consumption advisories.

Seafood Information and Resources - U.S. Food and Drug Administration's food information about the risks of methylmercury in fish and shellfish. You can also access this information toll-free at 1-888-SAFEFOOD.

Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry Mercury Factsheet - ATSDR's toxicological factsheet which answers the frequently asked health questions about mercury.

Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry Metallic Mercury Exposure Alert - ATSDR's National Alert about metallic mercury in school and ritual use.

Water Quality Criteria for Methylmercury - New criteria to protect human health from methylmercury, the form of mercury that accumulates in fish.

IRIS Health Assessment for Mercury and Methylmercury - Information about the human health effects that may result from exposure to mercury and methylmercury (separate health assessments). The Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) is a database of human health effects that may result from exposure to various substances found in the environment. The information in IRIS is intended for those without extensive training in toxicology, but with some knowledge of health sciences.

Toxicological Effects of MethylmercuryExit EPA Disclaimer- The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) July 2000 report on its review of mercury health effects data and the EPA's mercury "reference dose."

Tox Town - The world's largest medical library, the US National Library of Medicine, a part of the National Institutes of Health, has developed an introductory Web site about toxic chemicals and environmental health risks such as mercury, lead, and asbestos in the towns and cities where you live.

"Mercury Health Hazards" - The National Institutes of Health provides information on how mercury affects health including occupational exposure.

MedlinePlus offers health information from the National Library of Medicine.

The Health Care Providers page contains resources relating to issues of particular concern to people who work in the health care industry, including the medical uses of mercury, programs to reduce the use of mercury, health effects of mercury, workplace safety, how to handle mercury spills, and proper disposal and treatment of mercury waste.

America's Children and the Environment Report - EPA's Report (2003) on the progress to reduce environmental risks faced by children. The emerging issues section of the report presents information about important aspects of children's environmental health for which data recently have become available including mercury in fish.
