About Us

[IMAGE]: Random ImageThe White Mountain NF makes up 14% of New Hampshire lands and is one of the largest bodies of publicly owned land in the Northeast. For well over a hundred years, the White Mountains have provided a relatively large undisturbed landscape in which people can recreate, challenge themselves or enjoy shared experiences with others. The WMNF plays a particular role in serving millions of people who look to public land as a place to get away from surrounding urban environments. The Forest provides a wide range of opportunities for recreational users, a small sample of which includes: camping, skiing, kayaking, rock and ice climbing, hiking, mountain biking, snowmobiling, snow shoeing, driving for pleasure.

HISTORY
The White Mountain National Forest was established by Presidential proclamation on May 16, 1918. As with most National Forests in the Eastern United States, it owes its existence to the passage of the Weeks Act in 1911 which enabled the federal government to purchase private land and establish National Forests principally in the Eastern United States.
