Role/Crops/Team:


Dr. Shen serves as Information Technology Specialist to manage GEM project data. He uses PRISM (a proprietary database) to manage the GEM project activities, such as creating and mapping nurseries, topcross isolations, yield trials, GEM Field Day, and inventories. He is also coordinating yield trial testing and data collection with private and public cooperators. Each year, Dr. Shen analyzes the yield trial data and reports results to the GEM cooperators at the annual cooperator’s meeting. As an IT specialist, his role also includes collecting and managing the GEM lab analytical data; designing and updating the GEM web page; and preparation of electronic presentations.





Special Interests:


Dr. Shen’s interests currently focus on database management and statistical analysis, such as utilizing database tool and/or SAS to process data more efficiently. He is also interested in the corn breeding and food applications. One of his researches is to investigate the influence of breeding crosses (inbreds and hybrids) on the compositions of corn kernels. His interests also extend to the area that how to allocate the resource to maximize the utilization of GEM current resource. The examples include the investigation of applications of barcode system associated with GEM database and comparisons of different nursery practices in order to increase the GEM capacity.
