Biography:

Ephraim P. Glinert is a member of the Human Centered Computing (HCC) cluster in the Division of Information and Intelligent Systems (IIS), Directorate of Computer & Information Science & Engineering (CISE), and Professor Emeritus of Computer Science at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY.

Dr. Glinert manages proposals and awards relating to all aspects of human-computer interaction and assistive technologies that support the IIS core and cross-cutting areas of Human Centered Computing (HCC) and Human-Robot Interaction (HRI), respectively. This includes fundamental research, education and outreach projects and activities that result in developing new knowledge and a diverse, competitive workforce of scientists and engineers in these and related areas. Dr. Glinert is also involved with NSF initiatives in Science of Design (SoD) and Ethics Education in Science and Engineering (EESE). He is especially keen on promoting universal access to the emerging information society, with an emphasis on bringing the full power of computing to young children, seniors, and other traditionally under-represented groups.

Dr. Glinert has authored or co-authored numerous scientific papers, technical reports, and book chapters relating to his research. His undergraduate text "Introduction to Computer Science Using Pascal" was published by Prentice-Hall International in 1983, and translated into Hebrew by Everyman's University in Tel Aviv three years later. He is the editor of the two-volume set "Visual Programming Environments" published by IEEE Computer Society Press in 1990.

Dr. Glinert has served in various capacities on the organizing committees of numerous conferences, including: as General Chair for the 1994 IEEE Symposium on Visual Languages (VL'94) in St. Louis; as General Chair of the 1996 ACM International Conference on Assistive Technologies (ASSETS'96) in Vancouver (Canada); as General Chair of the 1997 ACM International Conference on Multimedia (MULTIMEDIA'97) in Seattle; and as General Chair of the 2002 IEEE Symposia on Human-Centric Computing (HCC'02) in Arlington, VA. As 3-term Chair of ACM's Special Interest Group for Computers and the Physically Handicapped (now renamed SIGACCESS) during the period 1991-2001, he was instrumental in initiating ACM's ASSETS conference series on assistive technologies.

Dr. Glinert holds undergraduate and M.Sc. degrees in mathematics from the Technion, Israel Institute of Technology, and the Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Washington.
