CISE

The Directorate of Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) hosted an informational meeting about the Network Science and Engineering Program (NetSE) to be held on September 5th, 2008 at the Westin Arlington Gateway Hotel from 9:00 – 4:20 (registration from 8:30-9:00). CISE is developing a comprehensive strategy to advance research and education in network science and engineering. As part of this effort, CISE has issued a new Cross-Directorate Solicitation which includes Network Science and Engineering (NetSE) as a cross-cutting research program. NetSE is a highly inter-disciplinary research program, focused on understanding networks broadly and at multiple levels of abstraction from the physical substrates through the architecture and protocols, to network of people, organizations and societies. Driven by the belief that transformative advances in a field often come from research at the intersection of multiple areas or disciplines, NetSE encourages collaborations among researchers in multiple areas of computer and information science, as well as with researchers in other relevant fields such as engineering, mathematics, economics, and the social sciences.

The purpose of the informational meeting was for CISE to inform the different research communities about NetSE and share with the participants the goals and scope of this multidisciplinary program. The meeting included presentations by NSF/CISE members and by lead researchers, who reported on-going NetSE workshops. The meeting enabled attendees to gain better understanding of NetSE's objectives and scope and also provided a forum to discuss and foster potential collaboration among researchers from the different disciplines.
