Lufkin, TX -- The State of Texas is currently conducting briefings, for local and state agency officials, outlining ways for eligible applicants to apply for federal reimbursement of eligible costs associated with the recovery of Space Shuttle Columbia material.

Following the briefings, FEMA and State of Texas representatives will hold face-to-face meetings with qualified applicants to fully explain the application process. Once completed, project officers will collect and review documentation, and write project worksheets.

When project worksheets have been completed and are signed-off by the State of Texas and the applicant, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) obligates funds to the state.

"We will make every effort to get the funds to eligible agencies in a expedient manner," said State Coordinating Officer Duke Mazurek, Department of Emergency Management (DEM), Texas Department of Public Safety.

The President's emergency declaration for the loss of the Space Shuttle Columbia makes available funding for debris removal and emergency protective measures.

"FEMA intends to speed the reimbursement process along so the State of Texas can get the funding and pass the funds along to those eligible local and state agencies who have worked in the Columbia recovery process," said Federal Coordinating Officer Scott Wells of FEMA.
