In West Africa, the annual biomass burning season that began in the fall of 2002 is still underway in early 2003. This Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image from the Aqua satellite on February 27, 2003, shows fires (red dots) scattered across (clockwise from top right) Mali, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Senegal, and Gambia. The sun glints brightly of the waters of the Atlantic Ocean in the lower left corner of the image.
