Social Networks

Shipmates,

I recently had a conversation on social media with my good friend Rear Admiral Rich Schneider (USCGR Retired) who is also the President of Norwich University. Last year they published this story on their school website. I thought it was worth posting again for our community. The social media is a powerful tool, but as we noted in a previous post there are security issues and reasons to act with good judgement.

ADM, do you or are you going to encourage other units/ commands to have profiles on social networks? As mentioned in a previous comment, someone had concerns about reservist getting information. Might a social network profile or twitter, focused on reservist be one way to get information out?

Thanks for your suggestion and that is something we will certainly consider as we step into the social media environment. One way we are improving information access for Reservists is through the Outlook Web Access (http://www.uscg.mil/announcements/alcoast/alcoast406.08.txt). We will continue to pursue ways to leverage social media to improve our mission execution and support, but we must balance with the challenges and risks associated with issues like security and bandwidth as we discussed earlier (http://www.uscg.mil/comdt/blog/2008/10/continuing-conversation-on-social-media.asp)

My expectations to other units were laid out in an All Hands message (http://www.uscg.mil/announcements/alcoast/ALCOAST45708.txt) and also distributed by video via CGVI and YouTube (http://cgvi.uscg.mil/media/main.php/v/video/080922-G-5809B-001wmv.html). Since then, we have released additional guidance on official internet postings (http://www.uscg.mil/announcements/alcoast/ALCOAST458.txt) and within the next couple of days you will see a new ALCOAST on unofficial postings.

Admiral Allen,
First off, thank you for the time that you take out of your schedule to address these types of questions. It shows transperency in our organization and helps us all to understand each other better.

I think what those in the reserve workforce are looking for is more of a "live version" of the infrequent reserve newsletters that most commands produce today. If we can push the information via .pdf, a lot of us don't see why commands cannot push the information via blogger, etc. Promotions, command morale events, critical ALCOASTs that require action, training oppertunities, mobilization resources, etc....these can all be included without risking OPSEC (for the most part).

As many surveys as I've seen about the conditions of life as a Coast Guardsman, I'd like to see one that addresses the communication gap of Coast Guard Reservists and the interaction from their commands. Lets solicite ideas on how to talk to each other from the troops.

The CAC readers are awesome and are appreciated however we need to look outside of the box. I dont think anyone is saying to put information on the web that we deem sensitive however we need to get the information out!

A Reserve Communication Initiative working group is in order or needs to be addressed in the existing Web 2.0 working group.

I will have a group look into how we can leverage social media for the Reserve and Auxiliary communities.

Admiral,

I would like to suggest that you add back links to your posts. I would allow others to link directly to your individual postings rather than the entire site.
