Name: Barbara R. Bingaman   Title: Agricultural Specialist I Organization: USDA-ARS-MWA-PIRU; Iowa State University Role/Crops/Team: Dr. Bingaman is the Agricultural Specialist for the Oilseeds Project at NCRPIS. She provides technical support for the oilseed brassicaceae and wild flax accessions. Dr. Bingaman manages the regeneration of these crops which involves propagation of plants from seed, maintenance of plants in the greenhouse and field, managing controlled pollinations, monitoring for disease and pest damage, harvesting, and seed preparation for storage. Dr. Bingaman collects observational and descriptive data and enters the data into the Germplasm Resources Information Network (GRIN) database. She documents field and greenhouse plantings with digital images and computer scans of plants, flowers and seeds. These images are loaded into GRIN. Dr. Bingaman trains and supervises student employees who assist with regeneration duties and imaging. Special Interests: Dr. Bingaman has been focusing on testing new and refined germination and growth maintenance techniques for the regeneration of accessions not successfully increased in the past. In addition, she has been experimenting with techniques to induce flowering in biennials not likely to overwinter at our location, including manipulations of vernalization treatments and transfer of field plants to the greenhouse for flowering and controlled pollination.
