Research Geneticist (Animal)

The incumbent conducts quantitative genetic and genomic research to more effectively use genetic variation in swine.  A primary component of the assignment is to expand and apply statistical procedures to estimate polygenic and quantitative trait loci (QTL) effects on economically important traits of swine.  Specifically, the scientist develops and applies statistical procedures to efficiently detect QTL regions affecting important traits; characterizes effects of marker alleles and their potential impact on genetic improvement through marker-assisted selection; estimates genetic parameters required for prediction of EPDs for complex traits; creates and evaluates objectives and indices for selection of swine; and determines whole genome associations.  Incumbent develops computer programming software and analyzes data in order to transfer technology.  Scientist publishes research results in peer-reviewed, scientific journals. Salary range is ($65,315 – 100,976).
