From: David Treharne [dtreharn@umich.edu] Sent: Tuesday, April 03, 2001 6:44 PM To: fdadockets@oc.fda.gov Subject: Docket 00N-1396 & Docket 00D-1598 Dear Sir or Madam, I wish for the FDA to place much higher restrictions on the development and marketing of genetically engineered substances (via gene splicing or similar technique. I am not talking about hybrid development using cross pollination techniques) in our food supply and environment. I feel the level of proposed testing is completely inadequate. One single errant substance introduced into our environment can cause much more harm than good. I believe the science behind these products is very immature, and we do not understand all the ramifications of changing genes. I desire for there to be a strict environmental study on any new plant or other substance prior to its release into our environment. I want a strict study, similar to medication trials, on any GE substance that is proposed for human or animal consumption. In order to identify GE substances, I want all GE substances labeled, and allow for non-GE substances to also be labeled as such. We have a right to know where our food has come from. Thank you for your consideration. Respectfully, William David Treharne 37534 Laurel Park Dr. N Livonia, MI 48152 Best Wishes, David Treharne Home: dtreharn@umich.edu Work: dtreharn@ford.com New!
