FDA Commissioner Dockets Management Branch (HFA 305) Food and Drug Administration 5630 Fisher's Lane, rm. 1061 Rockville, MD 20852 RE: Docket No. 00N-1396, and 00D-1598 Dear FDA, I am opposed to the proposed rules, which fall far short of what is needed to protect our food supply. So-called “voluntary labeling” denies consumers a basic right to know. Without mandatory labeling, I cannot know if I am unwittingly consuming genetically modified food stuffs which I choose not to eat; e.g., as a vegetarian, for reasons of health, I prefer not to eat meat or animal products. Your failure to require labels for genetically engineered and modified foods will not allow me to make an informed choice of what I wish to eat. Sincerely, Leonard E.
