State Responds Quickly to Parish President’s Request to Raise Highway 23

Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser asked DOTD to raise the low portions of Hwy 23 after recent floods from Hurricanes Gustav and Ike.  Michael Stack, DOTD’s District 02 Administrator, informed Mr. Nungesser that he agreed with the President that the highway needed to be raised, but at present no funds are available through his agency for the work.  Mr. Stack went on to advise President Nungesser that he has been working to get funds from the FHWA, but has been unsuccessful thus far.  Approximately $10,000,000 would be necessary to raise the low portions of the highway.  President Nungesser advised that he would seek other funding avenues such as Hazard Mitigation Funds through the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security.  This is critical to our residents, President Nungesser will be meeting with State Officials this week to try to find state funding and oil industry in Port of Venice in the lower end of Plaquemines Parish as well as our oil industry in Port of Venice and our gas facility in Port Sulphur”,  stated President Nungesser. “I will make every effort to secure funding before the next hurricane season”.  Mr. Stack has agreed to assist the parish in their funding efforts.
