Hurricane Katrina Flood Recovery Maps (Mississippi)
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Data
GIS is used to display and analyze spatial data that are tied to databases. The Katrina Recovery Maps were developed using GIS. Several data layers from the Katrina Recovery Maps are available as GIS shapefiles for download. To download the GIS data, click on one of the links below. Please refer to Mapping Methods and Data Sources page for more information on the development of these data.
- Preliminary High Water Marks (HWMs)
WinZip archive containing the Shapefile (32 KB) of the coastal HWMs collected in Harrison, Hancock, and Jackson, Counties in Mississippi following Hurricane Katrina.
- Note: For individuals without GIS capabilities who are interested in viewing the data, the preliminary HWMs are also provided in a simple Microsoft Excel table (54 KB).
- Surge Inundation Limits
WinZip archive containing the Shapefile (6.2 MB) of the inundation limits of the storm surge developed based on the coastal HWMs collected following Hurricane Katrina.
- Surge Elevation Contours
WinZip archive containing the Shapefile (0.7 MB) of the preliminary surge elevation contours derived from the coastal HWMs collected following Hurricane Katrina.
- Advisory Base Flood Elevation (ABFE) Contours and Breaklines
WinZip archive containing the Shapefile (26 MB) of the ABFE contours (last updated March 17, 2006). These contours are based on a new flood frequency analysis that takes into account Hurricane Katrina, as well as additional tide and storm data from other events that have occurred during the 25 years since the existing Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) were developed. Shapefile also contains open coast to back bay breaklines, where stillwater elevations decrease by 2 feet in each county, and riverine breaklines, where effective riverine flood profiles show riverine flood hazards that equal or exceed the advisory stillwater elevations for that county.
- Provisional Topographic Data
WinZip archives containing the Shapefiles of the provisional topographic contours for Hancock (15 MB), Harrison (46 MB), and Jackson (28 MB) Counties. These 2-foot contours are based on Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) data recently collected by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in partnership with the State of Mississippi. Data for Hancock and Jackson are still being verified by NOAA and are subject to change. For updated information, see NOAA’s topographic data clearinghouse at: http://www.csc.noaa.gov/crs/tcm/missions.html.
For additional information concerning these GIS files, such as the horizontal and vertical datum and other pertinent mapping details, please see the “Read Me” file included with each dataset.
