Mission Statement:         

Provides program support to scientists conducting studies with or involving all species of animals by diagnosing pathologic conditions, by planning and initiating therapy, by developing and carrying out health programs, by performing and teaching experimental surgery [as needed or requested], and by providing reproduction and obstetrical care.  Administers Federal and State programs and regulations related to disease control, purchase, sale, and transport of domestic animals and carries out Federal and State testing programs for herd certification, as well as assuring compliance with mandates regarding research animals as covered under the Animal Welfare Act (Public Law 89-544).

• AUP planning and guidance
• Assistance with sick or injured animals
• Assistance and training with anesthesia, surgery, and therapeutics.
• Assistance and training with euthanasia
• Clinical pathology: hematology and clinical chemistries
• Emergency veterinary services
• Assistance with animal acquisition and quarantine

Internship Program:

The Beltsville Agricultural Research Center provides an opportunity for University and College students to learn and gain experience in veterinary medicine through the Veterinary Services’ Summer Internship Program.  Veterinary students and graduates are also offered an opportunity to complete an externship in Food Animal Medicine.  These programs  provide experience and training in an agricultural environment dedicated to animal research.  Program objectives include discussions on understanding contemporary clinical problem solving, and reviewing problem oriented medical records, with subjective and objective data analysis.  There will be hands-on practice in history taking, animal inspection and examination. Hands-on practice in sampling, analyzing and use of clinical pathology data, as well as developing of herd health programs including use of integrated management systems will also be offered.  The internship program will include clinical rounds activities and discussion of veterinary emerging diseases as well.  If you or someone you know is interested in participating in the program, please contact Dr. William Hare at the ANRI Veterinary Services Unit.
