Research Project: INTERGRATE NASA'S GLOBAL SOIL MOISTURE REMOTE SENSING AND MODELING DATA INTO USDA'S GLOBAL CROP PRODUCTION DECISION SUPPORT SYSTEM

Location: Hydrology and Remote Sensing Laboratory

Project Number: 1265-13610-027-54
Project Type: Reimbursable

Start Date: Jul 01, 2006
End Date: Sep 30, 2006

Objective:
Project objectives are to improve the quality of current soil moisture products utilized by USDA/FAS by incorporating ARS/USDA remote data and data assimilation techniques.

Approach:
To reach the above objective, the project will have the following three tasks: 1.) Systematically assimilate AMSR-E and MODIS observations into GLDAS/LIS to produce global land surface and root zone soil moisture data prodcuts; and validate these data products with available field observations and other data sources to ensure data quality. 2.) Standardize and import NASA's surface and root zone soil moisture data products according to formats, projections and other requirements for the CADRE DBMS of USDA FAS 3.) Compare and evaluate NASA's soil moisture data products, as well as alternative products, with the current two soil moisture products currently used by FAS and derived from AFWA and WMO agro-meteorological data.
