Airport-to-Airport Statute Miles

The U.S. Code of Federal Regulations (“Direct Airport-to-Airport Mileage Records” CFR Title 14, Part 247) prescribes the following:

The direct airport-to-airport mileage record now maintained, and as hereafter amended or revised from time to time by the Office of Airline Information … … in the regular performance of its duties, is hereby adopted as the official mileage record of the Department and the mileages set forth therein shall be used in all instances where it shall be necessary to determine direct airport-to-airport mileages pursuant to the provisions of Titles IV and X of the Federal Aviation Act of 1958, as amended, or any rule, regulation, or order of the Department pursuant thereto. 

This means that the direct airport to airport mileages specified by OAI are those that the Department uses in compiling and disseminating the traffic data reported to the Department by the air carriers in the RITA-BTS Form 41 Reports. 

Some airline data users have indicated they are uncertain as to the specific mileages prescribed by 14 CFR Part 247; therefore, we are here providing the link for calculation of official DOT direct airport-to-airport mileages: www.transtats.bts.gov/distance.asp.

As new airports are encountered by air carriers they are added to the OAI AIRPORTS database and made available for official mileage compilations.
