This issue of the Bureau of Transportation Statistics' (BTS's) annual report has a new format. It is organized into three chapters: Summary, Indicators, and State of Transportation Statistics. The latter is focused on five core areas of transportation data needs: freight movements, passenger travel, air transportation, transportation economics, and geospatial information. The indicators chapter, using available data, provides analysis on 15 topics specified in the Intermodal Surface Transportation Act and the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century, which spell out BTS's legislative mandate. Among these topics are productivity in the transportation sector, traffic flows, travel times, vehicle weights, variables influencing traveling behavior, travel costs, availability of mass transit, frequency of vehicle and transportation facility repairs, accidents, collateral damage to the human and natural environment, condition of the transportation system, transportation-related variables that influence global competitiveness, transportation and economic growth, government transportation finance, and transportation energy). In the appendix of the report is a complete set of the data that is displayed graphically in the indicators chapter.

As in prior editions, this report is a companion to the National Transportation Statistics (NTS) report. NTS contains a more comprehensive selection of transportation data in tabular format.
