Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS)

The Montserrat GYTS includes data on prevalence of cigarette and other tobacco use as well as information on five determinants of tobacco use: access/availability and price, environmental tobacco smoke exposure (ETS), cessation, media and advertising, and school curriculum. These determinants are components Montserrat could include in a comprehensive tobacco control program.

The Montserrat GYTS was a school-based survey of students in grades 2A, 3B and 4C, conducted in 2000. A census of all students in Monserrat Secondary School was performed for grades 2A, 3B, and 4C. The student response rate was 93.0%, and the overall response rate was 93.0%. A total of 167 students participated in the Montserrat GYTS.


Prevalence

22.7% of students had ever smoked cigarettes (Male = 21.1%, Female = 23.1%)

13.9% currently use any tobacco product (Male = 14.3%, Female =13.9%)

5.0% currently smoke cigarettes (Male = 4.0%, Female = 5.3%)

10.9% currently use other tobacco products (Male = 13.0%, Female = 9.0%)

12.8% of never smokers are likely to initiate smoking next year

Knowledge and Attitudes

27.8% think boys and 15.2% think girls who smoke have more friends

4.4% think boys and 4.8% think girls who smoke look more attractive

Access and Availability - Current Smokers*

Environmental Tobacco Smoke

20.1% live in homes where others smoke

44.9% are around others who smoke in places outside their home

88.5% think smoking should be banned from public places

70.5% think smoke from others is harmful to them

12.9% have one or more parents who smoke

3.0% have most or all friends who smoke

Cessation - Current Smokers*

Media and Advertising

81.3% saw anti-smoking media messages in the past 30 days

51.5% saw pro-cigarette ads on billboards in the past 30 days

38.9% saw pro-cigarette ads in newspapers or magazines in the past 30 days

15.3% have an object with a cigarette brand logo

13.4% were offered free cigarettes by a tobacco company representative

School

66.5% had been taught in class, during the past year, about the dangers of smoking

50.3% had discussed in class, during the past year, reasons why people their age smoke

51.8% had been taught in class, during the past year, the effects of tobacco use

Highlights

  • 14% of students currently use some form of tobacco; 5% currently smoke cigarettes; 11% currently use other forms of tobacco.
  • ETS exposure is high - 1 in 5 students live in homes where others smoke; 4 in 10 are exposed to smoke in public places; over 1 in 10 have parents who smoke.
  • 7 in 10 students think smoke from others is harmful to them.
  • About 9 in 10 students think smoking should be banned in public places.
  • 8 in 10 students saw anti-smoking media messages in the past 30 days; half of students saw pro-cigarette ads in the past 30 days.
