Drawings indexed by media

To locate different types of drawing media, regardless of which collection they are in, search for the genre/format term "Drawings" in the Thesaurus for Graphic Materials. Examples of specific media include chalk, charcoal, crayon, graphite, ink, pastel, and watercolor.

Fine Prints Collection

Includes about 1,400 lithographs, etchings, and other prints by Joseph Pennell and almost 300 prints by James McNeill Whistler. For a list of print titles, search for names of artists represented in the Master Drawings Collection. [Go to Fine Prints search page]

Pennell Book Collection

Includes about 700 books, exhibition catalogs, pamphlets, and serials collected by Joseph Pennell. Many volumes contain Pennell's annotations and many have original engravings, woodcuts, or lithographs. The subject matter often concerns the graphic arts (illustration, printmaking, and printmakers) and artists or James McNeill Whistler. Manuscript Division

Pennell-Whistler collection, 1597-1937. More than 90,000 items, including correspondence, clippings, and other papers of Joseph Pennell and his wife, Elizabeth Robins Pennell, relating to family and business affairs and to James McNeill Whistler. Also, manuscripts and galley proofs for their publications, research notes for their biography The Life of James McNeill Whistler (1908), and drafts for lectures, sketches, drawings, and legal papers.
