RALEIGH, N.C. -- Federal and state emergency management officials today reminded victims of the 1999 floods that legal assistance is still available to them through the Young Lawyers Division of the North Carolina Bar Association.

More than 750 requests for legal help from individuals who suffered personal or business losses have been handled by the Young Lawyers since last fall.

The attorneys may help with insurance claims for property losses and medical bills, assist in drawing up new wills and replacing deeds or other valuable documents, provide advice on contracting for home or business repairs, and negotiate landlord-tenant disputes.

Individuals seeking legal assistance relative to the hurricane-spawned floods of last year are urged to call the Young Lawyers at 1-800-662-7407, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and ask for Disaster Legal Services.

Officials also warned flood victims that the clock is ticking ominously toward the deadline for registering for federal and state aid related to the disasters. January 18 is the last day applications will be accepted for the wide-ranging programs available to assist in recovery. Individuals in the disaster-declared counties are urged to call the Federal Emergency Management Agency hotline at 1-800-462-9029 (TTY 1-800-462-7585) from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. seven days a week.
