ATLANTA, Ga. -- Federal and local grants that total $55,000 have been earmarked for hazard mitigation planning for the City of Oceans Springs.

John B. Copenhaver, regional director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), said his agency will pay 75 percent of the cost, with local funding accounting for the rest.

The project will incorporate mitigation planning into the city's comprehensive plan, with data being used to identify problems and recommend mitigation measures. Mitigation is the program specifically designed to lessen the impact of future natural disasters on lives and property.

"Solid planning is the key to successfully coping with disaster," said Mississippi Emergency Management Director Robert Latham. "We're proud to be working closely with Ocean Springs as they work through the process of becoming more disaster resistant."

MEMA administers Mississippi's hazard mitigation program that aims making the state more disaster resistant by advancing projects that ultimately save lives and property and lowers recovery costs after a disaster.

FEMA's share comes from its hazard mitigation fund program, an initiative that allocated more than $11 million in similar projects in Mississippi alone during the decade of the 1990s. The Ocean Springs project was recommended by the MEMA.
