RALEIGH, N.C. In the first week of recovery operations for Hurricane Floyd more than 35,000 residents of North Carolina's 66 disaster counties registered for state and federal assistance and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) approved more than $2 million in direct aid to storm victims.
As the recovery gains momentum, here are the numbers:
- The first 40 travel trailers in what will be a community of 300 were installed by the state and assigned to homeless families in Rocky Mount. Three more sites are planned.
- The state has purchased more than 400 travel trailers for emergency housing and may buy more as families register and additional need is identified.
- Seventeen fixed disaster recovery centers and a roving office were opened in the flood area to provide information on assistance and answer questions.
- FEMA and the state deployed 55 community relations specialists in the impacted counties to assist residents with their recovery needs.
- Disaster housing grants totaling $1.8 million were approved for 1,582 families.
- Individual and family grants totaling $505,890 were approved for emergency housing and to replace essential lost property, such as occupational tools.
- 29,638 residents registered for disaster housing assistance.
- 18,006 applications received for disaster unemployment assistance.
- 14,505 persons received emergency assistance from the American Red Cross.
- 17,980 home repair loan applications issued by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).
- 5,721 business loan applications issued by SBA.
- 21,319 requests for federal income tax assistance with casualty losses.
- There were 17 requests from families for help with funeral expenses.
