RALEIGH, N.C. -- Direct assistance to North Carolina's hurricane victims reached $5.3 million Wednesday as 45,805 residents sought disaster assistance over the toll-free telephone intake line, 1-800-462-9029.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the state have approved various types of assistance to over 3,000 families for their losses, including emergency housing, home repair, replacement of lost essential property and temporary housing.
Here are the current numbers:
- There are now 130 units in place at the first travel trailer site in Rocky Mount, where 65 families have moved in. This will become a temporary community of 300 units. Other trailer sites are planned for Duplin, Greene, Jones, Lenoir, Nash, Pitt, Wayne and Wilson counties.
- There are 18 fixed disaster recovery centers and one mobile center in the flood area that have advised 11,607 applicants on assistance information.
- FEMA and the state have deployed 58 community relations specialists to deliver assistance information one-on-one with applicants.
- Disaster housing grants totaling $3.7 million were approved for 2,907 families.
- Individual and family grants totaling $1.6 million were approved for 670 families in need of emergency housing and to replace essential lost property.
- 36,520 families sought disaster-housing assistance and 13,256 sought aid to replace lost personal property.
- Crisis counseling is being provided to 403 families.
- 22,299 applications were received for disaster unemployment assistance.
- 17,327 persons received emergency assistance from the American Red Cross.
- 21,846 home repair loan applications issued by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).
- 7,099 business loan applications were issued by SBA.
- 26,150 requests were made for federal income tax assistance with casualty losses.
- There were 27 requests from families for help with funeral expenses.
- There have been 48 confirmed deaths.
- Animal losses are set at 30,500 hogs, 760 cattle and 2.5 million fowl.
