RALEIGH, N.C. -- Disaster assistance to North Carolina's 66 hurricane-ravaged counties reached $35.7 million Saturday as the number of residents signing up for state and federal aid topped 50,000.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) obligated $27.7 million for missions in the disaster area ranging from debris clearance to delivery of ice and water. In addition, $8 million in direct assistance for temporary housing and essential needs has been approved for more than 4,000 families

FEMA's toll-free application hotline, 1-800-462-9029 (1-800-462-7585 for the speech or hearing impaired) has received 51,127 requests for assistance. The lines are available daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. until further notice.
