RALEIGH, N.C. -- Disaster assistance to North Carolina's 66 hurricane-ravaged counties reached $35.7 million Saturday as the number of residents signing up for state and federal aid topped 50,000.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) obligated $27.7 million for missions in the disaster area ranging from debris clearance to delivery of ice and water. In addition, $8 million in direct assistance for temporary housing and essential needs has been approved for more than 4,000 families
FEMA's toll-free application hotline, 1-800-462-9029 (1-800-462-7585 for the speech or hearing impaired) has received 51,127 requests for assistance. The lines are available daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. until further notice.
Totals in brief:
- At the Rocky Mount travel trailer site there are 170 units in place with 94 ready for occupancy. Seventy-two families are occupying units here and seven families have been assigned trailers on private sites. The state has purchased 468 units thus far and sites are planned for Lenoir, Pender, Pitt, and Wayne counties
- Eighteen disaster recovery centers and a mobile center have helped more than 16,138 visitors with information and assistance with applications. A 19th center opens Monday at noon in Robeson County at 3409 Lackey St., Lumberton
- FEMA and the state have 59 community relations specialists delivering assistance information directly to applicants in the field
- Grants totaling $5.6 million were approved for 3,995 families in need of disaster housing
- Individual and family grants totaling $2.4 million were approved to help 9,188 families with serious needs not covered by insurance or met by charitable organizations
- 376 families requested crisis counseling
- 40,630 residents sought housing assistance
- 18,925 persons received emergency assistance from the American Red Cross
- Seven Red Cross shelters are housing 782 people. Peak shelter population was 48,022
- Meals served to date by all agencies: 1.1 million
- The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has issued 18,966 home repair loan applications and approved $5.2 million in loans
- SBA has sent out 7,361 business loan applications and approved loans for $990,600
- 29,006 applicants have been referred for income tax assistance with casualty losses
- There were 30 requests from families for help with funeral expenses.
- Power cannot be restored to 7,782 homes and businesses due to damage
- The ten major disaster declarations issued in as many states for Hurricane Floyd is a record for any single event
