WASHINGTON,D.C. -- Major flooding has subsided on the Tar River, though some flooding of farmland and lowlands along the river may continue to be affected. The river has fallen below flood stage at Rocky Mount (Edgecombe County) and is expected to fall below flood stage at Tarboro (Edgecombe County) and Greenville (Pitt County) within the next two to five days. The Neuse River continues to fall and is expected to remain above flood stage at Goldsboro (Wayne County) and Kinston (Lenoir County) until sometime next week.

The American Red Cross (ARC) is operating five shelters housing 522 people -- a decline of 86 people from yesterday. The 20 th Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) is scheduled to open today. There are 27 total DRCs planned.

All county Emergency Operations Centers (EOC) have closed, except for the Pitt County EOC.

Schools remain closed in Princeville (Edgecombe County), though trailers are being established as rooms so that classes may begin next week. One school being used as a shelter in Tarboro (Edgecombe County) remains closed until the families are transferred to alternate housing. The evacuees at Lenoir Community College were expected to be leased into manufactured housing yesterday, allowing the college to open soon.

Hazardous Materials Teams continue to dispose of animal carcasses. This operation is expected to be completed by October 10.

Inspectors are surveying damage to beaches and wastewater treatment facilities. There have been 369 requests for Public Assistance (PA) and $1,418,286 obligated in Infrastructure Support.

New preliminary damage assessment figures indicate 17,975 homes were impacted with 4,046 destroyed, 4,838 sustaining major damage and 9,091 with minor damage. Early estimates indicate damage to homes is more than $3.95 million.

To date, Human Services staff have located 5,146 temporary housing resources. There have been 505 travel trailers purchased and 414 have arrived of which 111 are occupied. Housing inspectors have completed 10,570 inspections. Human Services Shelter Teams continue to work to place families in the planned travel trailer sites of Grifton (Pitt County), Caswell (Lenoir County) and Fountain Industrial Park (Edgecombe County).

To date, $54.8 million has been obligated for this disaster. The total cost includes administrative costs, Disaster Unemployment Assistance, Individual and Family Grant Assistance, Temporary Housing Assistance, Public Assistance and operational mission assignments.
