RALEIGH, N.C. -- Federal and state assistance to North Carolina's hurricane disaster counties topped $40 million Wednesday with more than 8,000 checks sent directly to families that sustained losses.

Disaster housing assistance accounted for $10.8 million of the total and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has obligated $28 million more to pay for recovery missions assigned to other federal agencies.

More than 7,000 families have received housing assistance checks, which are being approved at the rate of almost $1.4 million a day. Grants to 814 individuals and families exceed $2 million to replace lost or essential possessions

FEMA's toll-free application hotline, 1-800-462-9029 (1-800-462-7585 for the speech or hearing impaired) received 54,861 requests for assistance. The lines are available daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. until further notice.
