RALEIGH, N.C. -- Federal and state assistance to North Carolina's hurricane disaster counties topped $40 million Wednesday with more than 8,000 checks sent directly to families that sustained losses.
Disaster housing assistance accounted for $10.8 million of the total and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has obligated $28 million more to pay for recovery missions assigned to other federal agencies.
More than 7,000 families have received housing assistance checks, which are being approved at the rate of almost $1.4 million a day. Grants to 814 individuals and families exceed $2 million to replace lost or essential possessions
FEMA's toll-free application hotline, 1-800-462-9029 (1-800-462-7585 for the speech or hearing impaired) received 54,861 requests for assistance. The lines are available daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. until further notice.
Totals in brief:
- 43,332 applications for housing assistance.
- 171 travel trailers in place at Rocky Mount with 145 ready for occupancy. The state has purchased 512 units. Sites are planned for Lenoir, Pitt, Pender and Wayne counties.
- Nineteen disaster recovery centers and a mobile center have given more than 20,000 visitors information and assistance with their applications.
- FEMA and the state have 59 community relations specialists in the field.
- 408 families requested crisis counseling.
- 18,925 persons received emergency assistance from the American Red Cross.
- Five Red Cross shelters are housing 505 people. Peak shelter population was 48,022.
- The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has issued 21,215 home repair loan applications and approved $12.5 million in loans.
- SBA has issued 8,375 business loan applications and approved loans for $1,312,900.
- Over 30,000 applicants have been referred for income tax assistance with casualty losses.
