RALEIGH, N.C. -- The joint federal-state recovery effort continued its commitment to reach out to North Carolinians who suffered losses from Hurricane Floyd floodwaters. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has approved funding for over $114 million including funds authorized for mission assignments, reimbursements to local governments for emergency protective measures and debris removal, grants and loans for housing assistance, and Small Business Administration (SBA) loans to help pay for uninsured losses.
The latest numbers in brief:
- Almost 60,000 residents have signed up for assistance over FEMA's toll-free application hotline, 1-800-462-9029 (1-800-462-7585 for the speech or hearing impaired). The lines are open daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. until further notice. Any applicant wishing to change a disaster inspection appointment or inquire about the status of their request for assistance should call the toll-free Helpline at 1-800-525-0321.
- FEMA has completed almost 2/3rds of scheduled housing inspections.
- 12,236 checks totaling $19.2 million have been disbursed for emergency disaster housing as of Saturday, which is the latest number available. 1,090 checks totaling $3.3 million have been issued in grants to individual and families for serious needs not covered by insurance or charitable organizations.
- Nineteen disaster recovery centers and three mobile centers have given more than 25,000 disaster victims information and assistance with their applications.
- FEMA and the state have almost 90 community relations workers assisting applicants directly.
- There are 281 state-purchased travel trailers occupied.
- The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has approved 954 loans for $44.3 million for repair of homes and businesses.
