RALEIGH, N.C. -- Almost 70,000 North Carolinians have registered for some form of disaster assistance as the result of Hurricane Floyd. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) officials said that 48,754 registrants have requested disaster housing assistance. More than 21,246 have applied for other forms of aid. The officials noted that almost 88 percent, or 42,759 homes, have been seen by inspectors, leaving approximately 6,000 homes to be processed.
More than $58 million has been disbursed for emergency disaster housing and individual and family grants, according to disaster officials. To date, 22,832 disaster housing assistance checks have been issued, totaling $36.4 million. Another 4,570 individual and family grant checks totaling more than $14.2 million have been sent to families to meet needs not covered by insurance and charitable organizations. Some $406,000 has been disbursed for disaster unemployment benefits.
A brief look at the latest numbers:
- The Small Business Administration has approved 2,509 low-interest loans for individuals and businesses totaling $116.3 million.
- Twenty-two disaster recovery centers have lent assistance to more than 35,000 disaster victims.
- There are 508 state-purchased travel trailers currently occupied.
- More than 70 federal and state community relations specialists continue Hurricane Floyd outreach efforts.
- More than 7,000 affected families are learning how to reduce their property damage risks when rebuilding their homes by talking with mitigation advisors staffing disaster recovery centers and mobile mitigation vans now visiting declared counties.
Recovery officials urge any disaster victims with uninsured hurricane-related losses to register for assistance by calling the toll-free application hotline at 1-800-462-9029, open daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. until further notice. Individuals with hearing or speech impairments who use special keyboard equipment (TTY) should call 1-800-462-7585.
