RALEIGH, N.C. -- Six weeks into the massive recovery effort taking place in eastern and central North Carolina, over 72,000 applicants have registered for some form of disaster assistance as the result of Hurricane Floyd. This almost equals the total applications for Hurricane Fran in 1996 when 72,730 state residents sought assistance.
State and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) officials said they expect the total number of applicants to increase now that uninsured damage attributed to Hurricane Irene is eligible for federal assistance programs. Recovery officials urge any disaster ctims with uninsured losses from Hurricane Floyd or Irene to register by calling the toll-free application hotline at 1-800-462-9029, open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. until further notice. Individuals with hearing or speech impairments who use special keyboard equipment (TTY) should call 1-800-462-7585.
A brief look at the latest numbers:
- More than $250 million in disaster aid has been disbursed in the form of housing assistance, individual and family grants, Small Business Administration (SBA) loans and disaster unemployment benefits for job losses related to the two storms.
- Some 50,569 registrants have requested disaster housing assistance. More than 21,779 individuals have applied for other forms of aid, including 3,656 individuals approved for special disaster unemployment benefits totaling more than $650,000
- More than $64.3 million has been disbursed for emergency disaster housing and individual and family grants, according to disaster officials.
- To date, 23,941 disaster housing assistance checks have been issued, totaling $40.1 million.
- Another 7,405 individual and family grant checks totaling more than $24.1 million have been sent to families to meet needs not covered by insurance and charitable organizations
- SBA has approved 4,304 low-interest loans for individuals and businesses totaling $188.3 million
- Twenty-two disaster recovery centers have lent assistance to more than 40,400 disaster victims
- Six hundred forty-eight travel trailers are currently occupied
- More than $18.7 million in federal funds has been reimbursed to local governments and public agencies for debris removal, infrastructure costs, and essential public services.
