» More Information on North Carolina Hurricane Floyd & Irene

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency’s "rebuild the right way" information vans will be at Lowe’s Home Improvement Warehouses in New Bern and Morehead City for six days to show home and business owners how to make their properties more disaster resistant.

The hours will be 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday, Nov. 16-21. These FEMA disaster risk-reduction information vans then will travel to other North Carolina Lowe’ stores. "We are pleased to participate in this important effort," said Lee McConnell, a Lowe’s district manager. "We are committed to getting this type of information out to citizens who suffered damage from Hurricanes Floyd and Irene.

FEMA specialists describe risk-mitigation techniques for all types of natural disaster damages, demonstrating measures, such as structural strengthening, elevation of structures and equipment in flood zones, and buyouts. Drawings and models show techniques, such as elevating heating panels, electrical panels and water heaters, and installing backflow valves on sewer and septic systems. Brochures detail how to floodproof floors and walls, what to do about mildew, how to minimize damage to manufactured homes and how to build storm "safe rooms.

"This is a chance for citizens who experienced damage to homes and businesses to talk to experts about what to do next," said Gavin Smith, assistant director for mitigation, North Carolina Emergency Management Division. "No appointments are made. Just walk in.

Lowe’s Home Improvement Warehouse, a Project Impact partner, is hosting similar visits by these FEMA information centers at many of its stores in impacted communities. Project Impact is a nationwide initiative of FEMA, in partnership with local business and community leaders, to make communities disaster resistant.

We urge those who are rebuilding to take this opportunity to make their properties more disaster resistant and to learn about state programs that move families out of harm’s way," said Todd Davison, FEMA deputy federal coordinating officer for mitigation in the North Carolina disaster recovery efforts.
