Half Billion Dollars Pumped Into N.C. Hurricane Recovery

RALEIGH, N.C. -- With the disaster assistance application deadline of Dec. 14 nearing, North Carolina this week may top the half-billion-dollar mark in money flowing in through federal programs. The total at the start of business today was $494,664,000, including:
- $297,123,000 on its way in the form of Small Business Administration (SBA) loans for 5,114 homeowners and 831 business operators.
- $50,163,000 approved for disaster housing assistance to 28,584 applicants.
- $43,439,000 allocated for debris removal, emergency safety measures, and repair of damaged North Carolina infrastructure.
- $53,707,000 approved in National Flood Insurance Program claims.
- $1,688,000 going to 4,888 persons needing disaster unemployment insurance.
There are 100 acquisition (or buyout) applications under development in Kinston, and 210 in Tarboro. Today is the deadline for requesting acquisition of damaged and flood-prone properties by the federal government to turn the locations into "green space" where further construction is prohibited.
Disaster recovery centers in affected counties have served 56,500 individuals and the federal/state helpline (1-800-525-0321) has taken 90,493 calls; 73,852 people have applied for recovery assistance by calling the registration line, 1-880-462-9092 (TTY 1-800-462-7585).
Officials urge that those needing to apply or to obtain help with their applications visit the centers or call the toll-free numbers as soon as possible before the Dec. 14 deadline.
