RALEIGH, N.C. -- Ten days remain for North Carolina's hurricane disaster victims to register for federal and state assistance to help them recover from their losses. The deadline, which has been extended once, is now 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 14.

The toll-free registration number is 1-800-462-9029. Individuals with speech or hearing impairments should call the TTY number, 1-800-462-7585.

Failing to register will close the door on the availability of a whole range of federal and state disaster assistance, including low-interest loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). Dec. 14 also is the last day to return completed SBA loan applications.

Assistance is available to any eligible resident of a declared county who suffered uninsured losses due to Hurricanes Floyd and Irene. All who incurred damage are urged to register, even if their property was insured, to protect their right to assistance should hidden damage appear after reaching a settlement with the insurance company.

To date, 75,898 victims of the storms have registered.
