Recovery Aid Reaches $630 Million as Deadline to Apply Nears

RALEIGH, N.C. -- With ten days remaining for victims of Hurricanes Floyd and Irene to register for assistance, state and federal recovery programs have provided more than $630 million to disaster victims in North Carolina's 66 declared counties.

Those who incurred damages are urged to call the registration number, 1-800-462-9029, before the application period closes at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 14. This deadline also applies to the return of completed applications for low-interest loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration.

Here are the latest totals:

Applications on the toll-free application line, 1-880-462-9092 (TTY 1-800-462-7585) now total 75,898. Disaster recovery centers have served 62,988 individuals and the federal/state helpline (1-800-525-0321) has taken 106,514 calls.

Persons who need to apply or get help with their applications should visit the centers or call the toll-free numbers. The helpline is available 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. daily. The application line is open 8 a.m. until 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
