Disaster Rebuilding Van to Visit Three Communities

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Residents of Avon, Kitty Hawk and Belhaven who are rebuilding hurricane- damaged structures will have an opportunity next week to learn some construction techniques that can make their properties more disaster-resistant.
A mobile demonstration van will visit those communities Dec. 14, 15 and 16 so that Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) specialists can provide information and answer questions on ways to incorporate greater disaster resistance in rebuilding.
The mobile center will set up at the Avon Food Lion on Tuesday, Dec. 14; the Kitty Hawk Wal-Mart off Highway 158 on Wednesday, Dec. 15; and the Belhaven Library on Thursday, Dec. 16. The hours each day will be 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. No appointment is needed.
Residents will be offered a variety of brochures and fliers on flood-proofing floors and walls, preventing mildew, reducing risk to manufactured homes, constructing safe rooms, elevating heating and electrical panels and water heaters, and installing back-flow valves on sewer/septic systems.
They can also examine drawings and models illustrating various rebuilding techniques and view photographs showing successful use of disaster-prevention measures.
