RALEIGH, N.C. -- North Carolina's hurricane victims will have additional time to register for federal and state assistance with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
Glenn C. Woodard, federal coordinating officer for the North Carolina recovery, today ordered the deadline extended to Tuesday, Jan. 18 because registrations continued to come in as the existing Dec. 14 deadline approached.
"In the week prior to this extension, we have received more than 1,500 applications," said Eric Tolbert, director of the North Carolina Emergency Management Division. "These numbers show us there is a need to keep the application period open. This is why we have requested an extension."
"We want everyone who suffered damage in hurricanes Floyd or Irene to receive the assistance they are due," said Woodard. "That's why we are here. The number still registering shows there are people out there who need to make that essential call."
The registration number is 1-800-462-9029. Persons who are speech or hearing impaired and use special keyboard equipment should call TTY 1-800-462-7585. The lines are open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., daily.
Since the Sept. 16 disaster declaration by President Clinton, more than $700 million in state and federal assistance has come into the state. This is the second deadline extension granted.
