Port Richey to get $349,000 for Stormwater Drainage

ATLANTA, Ga. -- A stormwater mitigation project designed to reduce flood damage to homes and businesses in Port Richey, Fla. will have $349,026 to do the job.
When completed, the project will substantially improve flood protection for residential and commercial structures in a mobile home park community. Included is the reconfiguration of U.S. Hwy 19 and Grand Boulevard to a new alignment that will enhance evacuation of about 200 residents in times of peril.
Affected will be about 100 homes and two commercial structures, said Joseph F. Myers, director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM). He said the project would also provide relief from chronic flooding by upgrading existing drainage, infrastructure, and lift station facilities.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will provide 30 percent of the project's cost, said John Copenhaver, FEMA regional director.
Copenhaver said federal funding is from FEMA's hazard mitigation grant program, an initiative that has placed nearly $50 million in Florida alone for mitigation projects during the past decade. Mitigation funding is above and beyond the hundreds of millions in disaster response and recovery assistance provided in the state during the same period.
Port Richey is a coastal community in Pasco County about 50 miles north of the Tampa Bay area.
