Onslow to Buy, Tear Down 2 Flood-Prone Homes

ATLANTA, Ga. -- Onslow County, located in North Carolina's coastal plain, will buy two homes in the community of Richlands, demolish the structures, and maintain the sites as open space.
The properties have been subjected to flooding over a period of years and are located in a floodway of the New River, said Eric Tolbert, director of the North Carolina Emergency Management Division (NCEMD). Seventy-five percent of the acquisition funding, which will total $168,383, will come from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), said FEMA Regional Director John Copenhaver. The properties, which have a history of repetitive flooding, will be torn down and the sites maintained as open space.
