Tropical Storm Mitch Damage Aid Declared For Palm Beach County

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Palm Beach County today was made eligible for assistance to residents and business owners for extensive damages stemming from Tropical Storm Mitch.
Federal Coordinating Officer Paul W. Fay, Jr., of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) said the county was added at the request of the state. The presidential declaration of Nov. 6 was for Monroe County after tornadoes and other storm spawned by Mitch struck the area.
State Coordinating Officer Joe Myers of the Florida Department of Emergency Management asked for the amendment, reporting to FEMA there were "extensive damages" caused by Mitch.
To make application for help, persons should call the toll-free FEMA registration number, 1-800-462-9029, or 1-800-462-7585 for those with hearing or speech impairments.
Residents and businesses suffering damages from the storm now can apply for FEMA/state assistance through several programs. Individual assistance includes temporary housing and minimal repairs to make a home habitable, individual and family grants for necessary disaster-related expenses and makes both residents and business owners eligible to apply for a low-interest loan from the U.S. Small Business Administration.
Since the presidential declaration for Mitch, nearly $323,000 has been approved for Monroe County residents and business owners.
