Raleigh, N.C. -- The telephone lines to register for disaster aid will be closed Thanksgiving Day, disaster officials announced.

The lines will re-open Friday at 7 a.m., and remain open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday through December 8.

The phone lines are for people with damage from Hurricane Isabel and other storms from September 18 through 26 to call and register for aid. All federal and state disaster aid programs can be accessed by calling the number, 1-800-621-FEMA (3362), or, for the speech and hearing impaired, TTY 1-800-462-7585

December 8 is the last day for North Carolina residents to register for aid.

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages Citizen Corps, the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
