Help Still Available as Disaster Centers Close

Raleigh, NC -- Help is still available, even though the last federal/state Disaster Recovery Centers are closing today, according to disaster officials.

The centers in Bayboro, Edenton, Hertford and Swan Quarter are all closing as of 7 p.m. Friday.

Help will still be available from two sources.

People who have already registered for aid with FEMA can call with other questions or information, or to track their application, through the same phone number-1-800-621-FEMA (3362), or TTY 1-800-462-7585.

Residents and businesses that got loan applications from the U. S. Small Business Administration (SBA) for low-interest disaster loans can get help filling out the applications at any of several SBA workshops in the area. The workshops are open Monday through Friday, and their hours of operation are:

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages Citizen Corps, the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
