Frankfort, KY -- The Disaster Recovery Center serving the Eastern Kentucky community of Martin will close at 7 p.m. Friday, August 8 state and federal disaster relief officials said today.
The center assists individuals affected by the storms, floods, mud- and rockslides, and tornadoes that struck the state between June 14 and June 27. On hand are federal and state disaster workers, crisis counselors, voluntary agencies and representatives from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) who help homeowners, renters, and business owners fill out disaster loan applications.
The Martin Disaster Recovery Center operates from the Martin Community Center, 7199 Ky. Route 80, Martin, KY.
"Even after this center closes, FEMA assistance is just a telephone call away," said Federal Coordinating Officer Scott Wells. "People can call FEMA at (800) 621-3362 to find out about assistance programs and the status of their applications."
Persons affected by the disaster are urged to call FEMA's toll-free number at 1-800-621-3362 and apply for assistance. Hearing and speech impaired individuals may call TDD at 1-800-462-7585. Some disaster programs include temporary housing assistance, help for other disaster-related needs and low-interest disaster loans.
On March 1, 2003 FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages Citizen Corps, the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
