Atlanta, GA -- Fayette County, Ala., has been given a $1,991,646 grant by the federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to pay for removal and disposal of debris resulting from severe storms.

FEMA Director Michael D. Brown, under secretary for the Emergency Preparedness and Response Directorate, a part of the Department of Homeland Security, announced the grant. Brown said "part of our mission is to ensure that communities are able to get up and running quickly following a disaster. This grant program helps make that happen."

The state and local governments will pay one quarter of the cost, or $497,911, and FEMA pays seventy-five percent, or $1,493,735. The project is to remove debris consisting mainly of trees, limbs and stumps, but will also include the removal of hazardous debris from private property.

Debris removal is a part of the FEMA Public Assistance program that makes available funds for reimbursement of disaster-related costs to state and local governments and certain non-profit agencies that provide essential services to the community.
