Deadline Nears For Disaster Unemployment Claims

Nashville, TN -- A series of deadlines to apply for disaster unemployment insurance are fast approaching, state and federal recover officials said today.

Self-employed and unemployed workers not covered by regular state unemployment insurance programs may apply for this federally funded assistance.

Disaster unemployment assistance is different from regular unemployment insurance. It applies to those who:

Applicants should take their Social Security number with them when visiting the nearest Labor and Workforce Development office.

The deadline is 30 days after the federal disaster declaration for each county eligible for individual assistance. For the 20 counties declared eligible on May 9, the deadline has already passed.

In 23 counties added on May 15, the deadline is Monday, June 16. (The Saturday deadline was extended to the next working day.) Those counties are Bedford, Bledsoe, Bradley, Cannon, Coffee, Davidson, DeKalb, Hamilton, Lincoln, Marion, Marshall, Maury, McMinn, Meigs, Monroe, Polk, Rhea, Rutherford, Sequatchie, Warren, Wayne, Williamson and Wilson.

The other upcoming deadlines:

June 20 - Hardin, Morgan and Sumner counties.

June 26 - Benton, Decatur, Fayette, Giles, Hickman, Humphreys, Lawrence, Lewis, Macon, Perry, Shelby, Smith, Tipton and Trousdale.

July 2 - Anderson, Cumberland, Knox, Loudon and Roane.

July 9 - Blount, Cocke, Jefferson and Sevier.
