Release Date: June 5, 2003
Release Number: R4-03-60

Atlanta, GA -- The head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) today announced approval of $1,297,894 to pay for debris removal in Cherokee County, Ala.

The debris included trees, limbs, stumps and other material strewn about public property countywide, in the aftermath of last November's severe storms and tornadoes.

"This money represents our commitment to ensuring that essential community needs are taken care of as quickly as possibly following a disaster," said Under Secretary of Emergency Preparedness and Response for the Department of Homeland Security Michael D. Brown.

Seventy-five percent of the cost, or $973,420, will be paid for by FEMA, with the state and local governments picking up the remainder, or $324,474.

The FEMA public assistance program makes available funds to state and local governments and certain non-profit agencies that provide essential services for reimbursement of disaster-related damages.
