Release Date: June 5, 2003
Release Number: R4-03-57

Atlanta, GA -- The head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) today announced approval of $2,061,800 to pay for debris removal in Winston-Salem following last February's ice storm.

During the Feb.27-28 storm, ice accumulated on trees throughout the city. As a result, numerous trees and limbs later fell on homeowners' property and public rights of way, necessitating removal.

"Part of our mission is to ensure that communities are able to get up and running quickly following disasters," said Department of Homeland Security Under Secretary for Emergency Preparedness and Response Michael D. Brown. "This grant program helps make that happen."

Seventy-five percent of the cost, or $1,546,350 will be paid for by FEMA, with the state and local governments providing the remaining $515,450.

The FEMA public assistance program makes available funds for reimbursement of disaster-related damage costs to state and local governments and certain non-profit agencies that provide essential services.
