Nashville, TN -- Three weeks and a day after President Bush issued a major disaster declaration for Tennessee, state and federal financial assistance to help individuals, families and businesses recover from losses suffered in the floods and tornadoes of May exceeds $14.1 million.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has received more than 9,000 applications for aid and 5,933 checks have been issued to eligible storm victims.

In addition, state and local governments are seeking $53 million in public assistance to reimburse them for damage to essential infrastructure and for emergency spending required in responding to the violent weather that began May 4.

Individual and household direct grants totaling $7.9 million have been approved for 1,803 applicants with serious disaster-related needs not covered by insurance or met by charitable organizations. Grants totaling $5.3 million were approved for 2,911 families with housing needs.

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has received 5,175 loan applications and to date has approved $1.1 million in property loss loans for homeowners, renters and businesses. Of the loan total, $975,400 went to homeowners or renters, $75,900 to businesses and $63,000 to help businesses recover from economic injury, such as loss of inventory.

Residents of declared counties who sustained uninsured losses in storms have until July 7 to register for disaster assistance with FEMA. The 60-day registration period provided expires on that day.

FEMA's toll-free application hotline, 1-800-621-FEMA (3362), is available daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The number is 1-800-462-7585 for the speech or hearing impaired.
