Richmond, KY -- The U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Emergency Preparedness & Response Directorate (FEMA) and the Commonwealth of Kentucky have pumped almost ten million dollars into local communities to help families, businesses, and local governments recover from February's winter storms. Here is a summary of the assistance to date:
- 4,250 families in the 30 declared counties have registered for assistance since President Bush declared the disaster on March 14th.
- Officials are currently processing 3,200 requests for Individuals and Households (IHP) assistance. These funds may be used to cover serious disaster-related expenses not covered by insurance or other programs.
- Grants totaling $5.9 million have been approved to help Kentucky families and businesses recover from the February storms.
- Disaster housing assistance checks totaling $4 million have been approved to assist homeowners and renters with temporary housing and minor home repairs.
- Checks totaling $1.8 million have been granted to help with other serious needs such as medical, dental, funeral, transportation, moving and storage expenses.

- The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has approved $1.2 million in low-interest disaster loans for homeowners, renters and businesses.
- $2.8 million in reimbursement has been approved for local governments through FEMA's Public Assistance program for repair of public infrastructure, emergency protective measures, $2.1 million of that for debris removal alone.
- Total Public Assistance costs could reach $44 million dollars in reimbursement.
- FEMA inspectors have completed 2,657 property inspections.
- More than 3,168 persons have called the FEMA Helpline (1-800-621-3362) for answers to questions about their application.
- Individuals and businesses can still apply for disaster assistance by calling FEMA at 1-800-621-3362. (TTY: 1-800-462-7585) Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. The application deadline is May 13th.
- Federal and state disaster assistance covers basic needs only and will not duplicate any other benefits or compensate individuals for their entire loss.
- FEMA and Kentucky Emergency Management (KyEM) Mitigation teams continue to work with state and local governments to identify potential projects that will reduce the impact of future disaster damages.
