Disaster Recovery Aid Exceeds $5 Million

Richmond, KY -- With more than $5 million in federal and state disaster assistance approved for families affected by February's winter storms, 52 Kentucky counties continue to make strides toward recovery more than a month later. Here is a summary of assistance to date:
- Applications for individual assistance have been received from 3,736 residents in the 30 declared counties since President Bush declared the disaster on March 14th.
- Grants totaling $5 million have been approved to aid Kentucky families and businesses recover from the February storms.
- Disaster housing assistance checks totaling $3.3 million have been approved to assist homeowners and renters with temporary housing and minor home repairs.
- Checks totaling $1.6 million have been approved to help with other needs such as medical, dental, funeral, transportation, moving and storage expenses.
- FEMA inspectors have completed 2,113 property inspections.
- Officials are currently processing 2,793 requests for Individuals and Households (IHP) assistance. These funds may be used to cover serious disaster-related expenses not covered by insurance or other programs.
- The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has approved $409,400 in low-interest disaster loans for homeowners, renters and businesses.
- To date, 148 applicants have made requests for an estimated $44 million in reimbursement assistance through FEMA's Public Assistance program for repair of public infrastructure, emergency protective measures, and debris removal.
- Disaster Unemployment Assistance is available through the Kentucky Department for Employment Services for those who lost income because of the disaster, and do not qualify for regular unemployment benefits. The deadline for filing an application is 30 days after the disaster announcement for a given county.
- More than 2,385 persons have called the FEMA Helpline (1-800-621-3362) for answers to questions about their application.
- Individuals and businesses can still apply for disaster assistance by calling FEMA at 1-800-621-3362. (TTY: 1-800-462-7585) Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. The application deadline is May 13th.
- While most assistance offered under government programs covers basic needs only and will not compensate individuals for their entire loss, disaster recovery programs can give a helping hand on the road to recovery.
- FEMA and Kentucky Emergency Management (KyEM) Mitigation teams continue to work with state and local governments to identify potential projects that will reduce the impact of future disaster damages.
